Why mold is common in Stuart
Stuart sits where the St. Lucie River meets the Indian River Lagoon, and a large share of its homes are on or near the water. The Treasure Coast's long wet season, from late spring through October, keeps humidity high for months at a time.
Stuart knows hurricanes firsthand. In 2004, Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne both came ashore on Hutchinson Island, just east of the city, three weeks apart. Roof damage, wind-driven rain, and flooding from storms like these are common starting points for mold, and hidden damage can surface years later.
Many homes in Stuart and nearby Palm City, Jensen Beach, and Sewall's Point are seasonal. A home closed up through the humid months with the AC off or set high can grow mold on walls, in closets, and on furniture before the owner returns.

Mold services in Stuart
What mold work costs in Martin County
| Service | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Small, isolated mold cleanup | From about $500 |
| Typical residential remediation, Florida | $1,500–$6,000 |

We could not find published inspection prices for the Stuart area, so only remediation ranges appear, taken from Florida contractor price guides from 2025 and 2026. Waterfront homes with damage in several rooms after a storm, or older homes where crews open walls and find more, tend to run higher. See the inspection cost guide and the remediation cost guide.
Florida mold licensing: what to check
Martin County has only 35 licensed mold assessors and remediators on the Florida DBPR registry, so you may end up hiring a company based in St. Lucie or Palm Beach County. That is fine, as long as the company holds a current Florida license, required for mold work over about 10 square feet, and carries $1 million in liability coverage. Look it up on myfloridalicense.com.
Keep the assessment and the removal with separate firms; Florida generally bars an assessor from remediating a home it assessed during the previous 12 months.
Will insurance cover it?
Nearly half of Stuart's homes were built before 1980, and with older houses the adjuster's first question is how long the water was there. Mold after a sudden event, like a pipe that burst or wind-driven rain through a damaged roof, may be paid up to the policy's mold sublimit, often $10,000; mold that built up from a slow roof leak or humid air is usually excluded.
On Hutchinson Island, Sewall's Point, and along the river, rising water from surge or a heavy tide belongs to a flood policy, and a new NFIP policy normally carries a 30-day wait. Give notice of a claim within one year of the loss, and within 18 months for a supplemental claim. Read our guide to mold and insurance.
