Why mold is common in Ocala
Ocala is the Marion County seat, surrounded by the horse farms of North Central Florida. Winters are mild, but from June through September the city gets hot, humid days and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and that is when most mold problems start.
Census figures show about 43% of local homes were built before 1980. Many of them are near downtown and in the historic district, where aging roofs and original plumbing are common sources of slow leaks, and some older houses sit on raised foundations with crawl spaces.
Newer construction is concentrated in large golf and 55-plus communities on the southwest side, such as On Top of the World. Owners who leave for part of the year should keep the AC running at a moderate setting, because a shut-up house in an Ocala summer can grow mold on walls and furniture.

Mold services in Ocala
What mold work costs in Marion County
| Service | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Mold inspection with testing, Central Florida | $125–$900 |
| Small, isolated mold cleanup | From about $500 |
| Typical residential remediation, Florida | $1,500–$6,000 |
| Large or hidden growth | $10,000+ |
Marion County has no published survey of inspection prices, so that row borrows homeowner-reported figures from the Orlando area of Central Florida. Remediation figures are taken from Florida contractor price guides for 2025–2026. In older homes with crawl spaces, treating the framing under the floor is often quoted as a separate line item. See our mold remediation cost guide.
Florida mold licensing: what to check
The Florida DBPR registry listed 40 licensed mold assessors and remediators in Marion County. Look up any company you are considering at myfloridalicense.com; a license is required for most mold jobs larger than about 10 square feet, along with $1 million in liability insurance.
If you live in a gated or deed-restricted community, the gate or HOA office may need the contractor's name ahead of time. The licensed assessor who tests your home generally may not remediate it within the following 12 months, so expect separate companies for each step.
Will insurance cover it?
An Ocala mold claim usually depends on whether the water arrived suddenly. A ruptured supply line, a failed water heater, or rain entering through storm damage may be covered, with mold limited to the policy's mold cap, frequently $10,000. If the AC was turned off for the summer, or failed slowly, and mold spread through the house, insurers usually call that a maintenance issue.
Flooding from heavy rain is excluded from homeowners policies and needs separate flood insurance, even inland. Florida gives you 1 year from the date of loss to report a new claim. Our guide to mold and insurance lists common exclusions.
