Mold Testing in San Diego: local factors
There is no state or federal limit for indoor mold, and California's health department concluded after the 2001 Toxic Mold Protection Act that it could not set one. A San Diego result is therefore read against outdoor air sampled at the same visit. If you can already see the growth, the EPA says sampling is generally not needed to decide on removal.
Inside walls rebuilt after the flood
For homes that took water on January 22, 2024 and were repaired quickly, a wall-cavity sample through a small hole at the base of a rebuilt wall, compared with the room and outdoors, shows whether growth is hiding behind the new drywall. Pair it with meter readings on the framing.
Coastal rooms with a smell
In beach neighborhoods, a closed bedroom or closet can smell musty without any visible spots. Air samples in that room, another room, and outside show whether spore levels indoors are actually elevated or whether the issue is damp air that ventilation can fix.
Before buying
California home inspectors are unlicensed and rarely sample. If the house took water in 2024 or the report mentions stains, lab work during your inspection contingency costs far less than opening walls after closing; see mold and home inspections.
After remediation
California defines no clearance standard. Agree in writing on what counts as a pass, such as no visible growth, dry framing, and indoor counts in line with outdoors, and use a tester with no part in the removal.
Cost
HomeGuide's national data puts lab analysis at about $50 to $350 per sample, before the visit fee. With several samples and a report, the total nears a full inspection, about $300 to $1,000 in Angi's national range. To find a source first, book a mold inspection in San Diego; for removal, see mold remediation in San Diego.
Setting up the test
Say what you want the result to decide. The company you reach will propose the samples and give a price first; the call costs nothing.

Licensing for mold testing in San Diego
California does not license mold testing. Ask which accredited lab reads the samples and whether the tester is separate from any company that would do the removal.
